Middlesex, N.J. -
Former Rutgers student Dharun Ravi appeared in court on Wednesday morning to begin his 30 day sentence in the bullying death of his gay roommate, Tyler Clementi.
Clementi killed himself after Ravi used a webcam to spy on him while he made out with another man in their dorm room.
On Tuesday, the day before he began his sentence, Ravi offered his first public apology -- through his attorney.
"My behavior and actions, which at no time were motivated by hate, bigotry, prejudice or desire to hurt, humiliate or embarrass anyone, were nonetheless the wrong choices and decisions," he wrote in a statement. "I apologize to everyone affected by [my]... thoughtless, insensitive, immature, stupid and childish choices."
Ravi is appealing the sentence, so he is not yet obligated to serve any jail time. However, his attorney said he wanted to get it over with.
