Sun. May 13, 2012

Havana, Cuba - Cuban President Raul Castro backs gay rights, according to his daughter.

Mariela Castro is in charge of Cuba's National Center for Sex Education and on Saturday she led transgender dancers in a conga line in celebrating the fifth annual Cuban Day Against Homophobia.

Mariela Castro wants Cuban lawmakers to legalize same-sex civil unions.

"The Cuban President has been talking about this issue, but he has not made it public," she told AFP. "It is surely part of his strategy."

The Cuban government put gays in internment camps in the 1960s.
