Mayor of London stops plan to advertise 'ex-gay' group on city buses

Thu. April 12, 2012

London - London Mayor Boris Johnson has stepped in to stop an "ex-gay" Christian group from putting ads on the sides of buses.

The ads -- with white text on a red banner -- said "Not Gay! Ex-Gay, Post-Gay And Proud. Get Over It!"

The ads were paid for by "Core Issues Trust," which pays for "reparative therapy" for gays and lesbians. The ad campaign was also being supported by an Anglican group that compares homosexuality to alcoholism.

"London is one of the most tolerant cities in the world," Johnson told the Guardian. "It is clearly offensive to suggest that being gay is an illness that someone recovers from. I am not prepared to have that suggestion driven around London."

Cores Issues Trust leader Mike Davidson called that "censorship."
