California's many state colleges and universities might soon ask students for their names, ages, grades -- and sexual orientations.
A new California state law pushes the University of California and other institutions to insure they are offering proper services for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students. But it's hard to know whether service levels are appropriate if you don't know how many students are LGBT.
Some lawmakers are still opposed to the law and the implementation, reported the Los Angeles Times.
"It is an invasion of privacy," said Republican State Sen. Tom Harman.
There are also questions about asking minors about their sexuality. Faculty in the UC-systemwide "Academic Senate" recently voted to recommend that students are asked when they enroll, not when they apply.
