Three women in Boston say they can't be charted with a hate crime for beating up a gay man because they are lesbians.
Sisters Erika Stroud, 21, Felicia Stroud, 18, and one of their domestic partners, Lydia Stanford, attacked the man because he bumped into them on a stairwell.
The women are accused of beating and kicking him, and using homophobic slurs during the attack.
One of their defense attorneys said the victim used racial slurs against the women, and that he was the aggressor.
The issue of whether or not a hate crime was committed is a big one, because hate crimes usually bring much longer sentences.
Experts scoffed at the women's argument.
"Someone who is Jewish can be anti-Semitic," ACLU attorney Sarah Wunsch told the Boston Herald.
