Maryland governor apologizes for wife's pro-gay comments

Sun. January 29, 2012

Baltimore, Md. - Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley has apologized for his wife after she said opponents of gay marriage are "cowards."

Gov. O'Malley is a Democrat and a strong supporter of gay marriage himself.

But he told attendees at the 25th National Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Equality conference that his wife, Katie, went too far by "using words of hurt, rather than words of healing."

Mrs. O'Malley was addressing that same conference on Thursday night when she told the crowd "there were some cowards that prevented [gay marriage] from passing last year."

"I love my wife very, very much... [but] none of us speak perfectly," Gov. O'Malley said.

He had apparently gotten an earful from legislators after his wife's speech, reported the Washington Post.
