Members of Chicago's transgender community and allies attended the annual Equality Illinois transgender social, Saturday Jan. 21 at the Mayne Stage, 1328 W. Morse, in Rogers Park.
The Winter Season Transgender Community Social was the second networking event for the transgender community held by Equality Illinois (EQIL), the state's oldest and largest organization advocating for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) equality.
"The great things about an event like this are that it provided a rare social occasion for trans folk to get together socially at the same time that it afforded a few candidates a chance to meet with voters," said Christina Kahrl, EQIL board member. "It also gives us an extra chance to talk to people face-to-face, to hear their concerns."
Representatives of EQIL shared the groups increased outreach to the transgender community, which includes participation with the Lakeview Action Coalition in working on new guidelines for the Chicago Police Department to ensure the rights of transgender people.
Kahrl along with EQIL board Vice President Catherine Sikora organized the event, which pushed nearly 100 attendees.
