Anti-gay Rick Perry drops out of GOP presidential race

Thu. January 19, 2012

Texas Governor Rick Perry has suspended his GOP bid for president. CNN reported Thursday that Perry will drop out of the race prior to Thursday's CNN debate in South Carolina. He is expected to endorse Newt Gingrich.

Seen as a polarizing candidate in the race, Perry often challenged GOP front-runner Mitt Romney.

Perry drew sharp criticism in December for an anti-gay ad he released ahead of the Iowa caucuses, comparing the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell to prayer in school.

"I'm not ashamed to admit I'm a Christian -- but you don't need to be in the pew every Sunday to know that there's something wrong in this country when gays can serve openly in the military, but our kids can't openly celebrate Christmas or pray in school," he said in the ad, which was heavily "disliked" on YouTube.

Ironically the music used in the ad was from a gay composer.
