New Jersey Democrats plan to push gay marriage this year, putting moderate Republican Gov. Chris Christie in a tight spot.
New Jersey voters are mostly Democratic and have voted for Democratic presidential candidates in every election since 1992. They're considered liberal on social issues and have offered domestic partnerships to gay and lesbian couples since 2004.
However, now that neighboring New York is offering marriage to same-sex couples, lawmakers in New Jersey feel like it's time to take a stand.
"Deep down, perhaps [Christie] supports some of these measures, but because of the right wing and the tea party element of the party, he's forced to oppose them," state Sen. Paul Sarlo told NJ.com.
Christie refused to tell the newspaper whether he would sign a gay marriage bill if it passed.
He is scheduled to give his "State of the State" speech on Tuesday.
