Cardinal George's planned commencement appearance draws protests

De Pere, WI - An online petition to have Cardinal Francis George removed as commencement speaker at St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin is finding widespread support.

George, the head of the Catholic Conference of Illinois and the Archbishop of Chicago, remains under fire for an anti-gay statement he made last week.



In an interview with Fox Chicago News, George compared the gay rights movement to the Ku Klux Klan.

"You don't want the gay liberation movement to morph into something like the Ku Klux Klan, demonstrating against Catholicism," said George.

Upon hearing the Cardinal's controversial statements, St. Norbert students and alumni started a petition asking the college to remove George as commencement speaker in May.



In less than 24 hours the petition garnered nearly 300 signatures, At this time the college has no plans to cancel George's May 14th appearance. The school will present the Cardinal with an honorary degree.

The Cardinal's comments have inspired a number of online petitions that include calls to have him removed from his position.
