Gays and lesbians in Illinois civil unions will be able to file joint tax returns

Mon. November 28, 2011

Chicago - Gay and lesbian couples in Illinois civil unions will be able to file their taxes jointly starting next year.

The Illinois Department of Revenue made the announcement on Monday.

Couples will still have to file their federal tax returns separately.

Residents of Illinois pay a flat 5 percent tax regardless of marital status, so gay and lesbian couples won't save money.

And the federal government still doesn't recognize civil unions, so couples will still have to file their federal taxes separately.
