Former Ambassador exasperated with Cain's stance on homosexuality

Wed. November 16, 2011

San Francisco - James Hormel, the country's first openly gay ambassador, is not happy that Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain says being gay is a choice.

"Being gay is not a choice. If people can come to understand that and people like Herman Cain can stop saying it is a choice, then maybe we'll make some serious progress," Hormel wrote.

The comments come in a new autobiography called "Fit to Serve: Reflections on a Secret Life, Private Struggle and Public Battle to Become the First Openly Gay U.S. Ambassador."

"Although people don't agree with me, I happen to think that it is a personal choice," Cain told CNN host Piers Morgan.

And when Morgan tried to compare race and sexuality, Cain disagreed.

"I was born black," he said.

Hormel served as ambassador to Luxembourg during Bill Clinton's presidency. He is the grandson of Hormel Foods founder George Hormel.

In the autobiography, Hormel also writes about being questioned about his sexuality during his confirmation hearing.

"I walked in prepared for just about every question, except the ones [Sen. Tim Hutchinson] asked," he said.
