Frank Mugisha will be honored on Thursday night for pushing for gay rights in Uganda, a country so homophobic that his group has to meet in secret locations.
Ethel Kennedy will present Mugisha with the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award in Washington, D.cC.
"It gives me more courage to continue doing the work I'm doing," Mugisha told The Associated Press. "It sends out a message, not only to my country but to other countries that criminalize homosexuality."
Uganda's parliament is once again considering a bill that would punish homosexuals with prison or death.
The proposed law has been pushed by evangelical Christians from other countries, as well as far-right Ugandan politicians and religious leaders.
Mugisha will get $30,000 and a promise of six years support to raise other funds and get more publicity for the cause.
