Anti-gay Republican congressmen record 'It Gets Better' video

Wed. October 26, 2011

Chicago, IL - New Jersey's congressional delegation has recorded an "It Gets Better" video with an ironic twist -- three of the Republican congressmen involved have voted against legislation that would guarantee gays and lesbians equal rights.

"No one should ever be bullied. No one should ever be abused or tormented by others," said Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) in the video.

"Growing up is tough, especially if you are picked on," said Rep. Rush Holt (D-N.J.). "But no matter what bullies in your school say, you should never be ashamed of who you are and what you feel."

"As you grow up, people will honor your differences," said Sen. Robert Menendez.

The video also includes Republican Reps. Leonard Lance, Frank LoBiondo, and Jon Runyan, who have all voted against legislation that would have advanced gay rights.

"We can't completely eliminate bullying, but there are actions we can take to make things better now," said LoBiondo.

Democratic Reps. Bill Pascrell, Donald Payne, Steve Rothman also participated. All three have been praised for their support of gay rights.
