Conservative group attacks gay Rep. Jared Polis' new baby boy

Tue. October 4, 2011

Washington, D.C. - A conservative group is taking aim at gay Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colorado) and his newborn son.

Polis and his partner, Marlon Reis, announced the healthy birth of their son, Caspian Julius, on Friday.

"Baby and parents are doing well," they wrote in a brief birth announcement. "Baby has learned to cry already! No gifts please, just nice thoughts for Caspian, humankind, the planet, and the universe!"

They did not say whether Caspian was born via surrogate or adopted, which was reason enough for the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) to attack.

"We have no clue whether it was a planned motherless family or whether he and his partner stepped in to give a motherless child a family -- since he will not say," NOM posted on its blog.

The group also tweeted: "Openly gay #CORep, @JaredPolis announces with pride that his child has no mother."

Polis has become the first openly gay member of Congress to also be a parent.
