Iowa Democrats are at risk of losing their one-seat majority in the State Senate, which could put the state's gay marriage law at risk.
State Sen. Swati Dandekar (D-Marion) has resigned to take a job with the Iowa Utilities Board. She leaves behind a district that is actually majority Republican.
"It is a very good opportunity for Iowans to elect a pro-jobs fiscal conservative to get Iowa back on track," Senate Republican Leader Paul McKinley, R-Chariton told the Des Moines Register.
Both sides are gearing up for a huge fight.
"I think it will probably be the most expensive Senate race in a short time that we've ever had," Democratic Senate President Jack Kibbie told the paper.
