AIDS Run & Walk Chicago, the Windy City's high-profile annual fundraiser that combats HIV/AIDS, takes place on Saturday, October 1, at Columbus and Balbo in Grant Park.
Proceeds benefit the AIDS Foundation of Chicago and the programs/services of more than 125 local HIV/AIDS organizations. Start time is 8:30 a.m.
This year marks an HIV/AIDS milestone as 2011 is the 30th anniversary of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention's first official recognition of the disease.
The event features a 10K run, 5K run and 5K walk. AIDS Run & Walk Chicago features plenty of on-site entertainment, and a Health & Fitness Village hosted and sponsored by the Illinois Department of Public Health.
Thousands are expected to participate. This includes a large contingent of corporate teams as well as those formed by local high schools and colleges.
Since it was established in 2001, AIDS Run & Walk Chicago has netted more than $3 million to battle the epidemic.
Registration is $25 in advance; $30 on-site.
