Picture of Empire State Building in rainbow colors goes viral

Sat. June 25, 2011

New York City - A photo of the Empire State Building lit up in rainbow ‘pride' colors has gone viral following the historic passage and signing of New York's gay marriage bill.

"Empire State Building" is now a trending topic on Twitter.

It's unclear if the picture was taking tonight, but the tower has been decked-out in red, orange, purple, blue and green lights for Pride Week in New York.

Late Friday night, the New York State Senate voted 33 to 29 to legalize gay marriage, striking a major victory for gay rights.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the measure shortly before midnight Friday.

The new law will take effect in 30 days making New York the sixth state, and by far the largest, where marriage equality will be extended to all people regardless of sexual orientation.

Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Iowa and Washington, D.C. allow same-sex marriage.
