Adoptions by gay and lesbian parents increase dramatically

Wed. June 15, 2011

Washington, D.C. - The number of gay and lesbian adoptive parents in the United States has more than doubled over the past ten years, according to new census data.

The New York Times reports that 8 percent of same-sex parents reported that at least one of their children were adopted in 2000. In 2010, 19 percent said they were adoptive parents.

Lesbian and gay parents are flat-out prohibited from adopting children in Utah and Mississippi, but they face significant challenges in many other states.

Gary Gates, a demographer at the Williams Institute on Sexual Orientation Law at UCLA told the newspaper that about 65,000 adopted children live in families with a gay parent -- about four percent of adopted children overall.
