Milwaukee, WI -
The openly-gay intern widely credited with saving the life of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, was in in Milwaukee Saturday night speaking at PrideFest.
Daniel Hernandez joined Wisconsin State Rep. JoCasta Zamarripa (D-Milwaukee) and a number of other leaders on the Stonewall stage at PrideFest as part of a panel on Latino, LGBT and youth issues.
The 21-year-old hero encouraged LGBT youth to become civically engaged and encouraged participation in what he called the important upcoming elections.
Hernandez, who hopes to graduate from the University of Arizona next May, was on his fifth day as an aide to Giffords when the shooting occurred outside a Tucson grocery store on the morning of Jan. 8. He rushed to Giffords side and covered the wound in her head with his hand.
Giffords is expected to be discharged from a Houston rehabilitation center soon. Hernandez said he had spoken to the Congresswoman over the phone.
Sunday the first photographs of Giffords since she was shot were posted on Facebook.
