Openly-lesbian Jane Lynch not the first LGBT star to host the Emmys

Fox television announced Thursday that Glee star Jane Lynch will host this year's Emmys. The openly lesbian actress nabbed her own Emmy in 2010 for her role as cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester the Fox hit series.

"I am tickled pink to be hosting the Primetime Emmys," Lynch said in a statement. "I'm looking forward to singing, dancing and sporting my finest tracksuit."

"We're delighted to have Jane Lynch host the Primetime Emmys this year," John Shaffner, chairman and chief executive officer of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, said in a statement Thursday. "When our host has comedic, dramatic and musical talents -- as Jane proved in last year's opening number -- we know it's going to be fun for us and for the audience at home!"

"Jane was my first -- and only -- choice as the host for this year's Primetime Emmys, and I am glad she said 'yes,'" added executive producer Mark Burnett.

The 50-year-old Lynch, a Chicago native, has a new memoir Happy Accidents coming out on Sept. 13 where she'll talk about coming out gay and her life with partner, Dr. Lara Embry.

Lynch follows gay and lesbian stars Neil Patrick Harris, Ellen DeGeneres, and Wanda Sykes in hosting the Emmys.

Emmy nominations will be announced on July 14.

The 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards from Los Angeles' Nokia Theatre will air on Sunday, Sept. 18 on Fox.
