President Obama has declared June to be national Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month, in a press release that underlines his administration's achievements vis a vis gay rights (and ignores the lack of progress on the gay marriage front nationally).
"Each June, we commemorate the courageous individuals who have fought for LGBT Americans, and we rededicate ourselves to the pursuit of equal rights for all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity," the proclamation reads.
The proclamation then goes on to list progress on LGBT rights in the United States and abroad, including the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and the U.S.'s push at the United Nations to have gays and lesbians treated fairly in other countries.
The proclamation also notes that it's now illegal for hospitals to discriminate against gay and lesbian partners when it comes to hospital visits.
"I call upon the people of the United States to
eliminate prejudice everywhere it exists, and to celebrate the great diversity of the American people," the proclamation says in a flourishing finish.
