Apple is under fire for allowing an anti-gay iPhone app from the "ex-gay" group Exodus International.
The app is basically a web browser combined with some rudimentary social media software. It allows the user to learn more about Exodus' position (which is that people have a choice to be gay, and thus can choose not to be).
As of Friday afternoon, a petition on Change.org demanding that Apple remove the Exodus app had attracted more than 23,000 signatures.
"There are a lot of misconceptions about who we are. We want to have an equal representation on Apple of our biblical worldview," Jeff Buchanan of Exodus International said in an interview on the Christian Broadcasting Network on March 15 (embedded below).
He claimed opponents don't understand the purpose of Exodus.
A lot of those people have been fed misinformation about who we are and what we do," he said. "We love those who struggle with same sex attractions or who are gay. We want to communicate the message of Christ to them."
Truth Wins Out, which started the Change.org petition against the app, begs to differ.
"Apple doesn't allow racist or anti-Semitic apps in its app store, yet it gives the green light to an app targeting vulnerable LGBT youth with the message that their sexual orientation is a 'sin that will make your heart sick' and a 'counterfeit.' This is a double standard that has the potential for devastating consequences," the petition said.
