Hollywood -
Producer Brannon Braga, former executive producer of "Star Trek: Enterprise" and writer/producer for "Star Trek: Voyager," said in a recent interview that he regrets never including a single gay or lesbian character.
Braga is one of the most prolific writer/producers of the Star Trek series, and as such, AfterElton.com reports he's come under heavy fan criticism for not including gays.
"It was a shame for a lot of us. There was a constant back and forth about well how do we portray the spectrum of sexuality. There were people who felt very strongly that we should be showing casually two guys together in the background in [the bar] Ten Forward," he said.
"I have no doubt that those same creative players wouldn't feel so hesitant to have, you know, have been squeamish about a decision like that [later on]."
Braga is currently producing a new series called "Terra Nova," and said that gay characters would be considered.
AfterElton points out that "Star Trek" founder Gene Roddenberry told The Advocate back in 1991 that "Star Trek: The Next Generation" would at least include gay characters on board the ship, even if they didn't play a prominent role.
Roddenberry died that year, and it never happened.
