Target continues to donate to anti-gay politicians

Wed. December 22, 2010

Minneapolis, Minn. - The donations to anti-gay candidates that landed Target in such hot water this past summer did not stop.

That is in spite of assurances from Target PR and CEO Gregg Steinhafel that he would "take a leadership role in bringing together a group of companies and partner organizations for a dialogue focused on diversity and inclusion in the workplace, including GLBT issues."

That was back in August.

However, The Awl dug through Target's corporate financial records since then, and found the company's donations continue.

"As previously indicated, we're taking a thoughtful and planful approach to this issue. Target is engaged in ongoing dialogue, both internally and externally, with a variety of leaders and expects to have more to share soon regarding our plans," a Target spokesperson told The Awl.

In August, Steinhafel apologized for the company's $150,000 political donation to fund anti-gay politics; the letter to employees said he was "genuinely sorry."

The Minnesota-based retailer drew fire from LGBT groups, including the Human Rights Campaign, for giving $150,000 to a right-wing political action committee (PAC) known as Minnesota Forward.
