Johnny Depp: Disney asked if Jack Sparrow was gay

Tue. November 30, 2010

Hollywood - Johnny Depp said that a Disney executive asked him if his character in "Pirates of the Caribbean," Jack Sparrow, was gay.

"Upper-echelon Disney-ites, going, What's wrong with [Jack Sparrow]?" Depp told Vanity Fair. "Is he, you know, like some kind of weird simpleton? Is he drunk? By the way, is he gay? And so I actually told this woman who was the Disney-ite… ‘But didn't you know that all my characters are gay?' Which really made her nervous."

Depp said that former Walt Disney CEO Michael Eisner "couldn't stand" his interpretation of the Jack Sparrow character.

"I think it was Michael Eisner, the head of Disney at the time, who was quoted as saying, ‘He's ruining the movie,'" Depp said.
