Howard Brown Health Center has reached a financial milestone with Tuesday's announcement that it has surpassed its $100,000 Challenge Grant from an anonymous donor.
Since the launch of the Lifeline Appeal in early November, hundreds of people have made donations toward matching the $100,000 challenge by Nov. 30 with the total going toward the bigger $500,000 in 50 Days Lifeline Appeal.
"As of today, we have raised $300,000 and are 60% towards reaching our goal of raising $500,000 in 50 Days," said Jamal M. Edwards, President and CEO of Howard Brown Health Center. "We're now closer to our ultimate goal and better positioned to continue our critical services that our patients and community has come to rely upon us."
Howard Brown still needs to raise $200,000 over the next 30 days to reach its goal of $500,000 in 50 Days.
Edwards, who was appointed president and CEO of Howard Brown in June after two top executives were dismissed, announced in early November that the 36-year-old center must raise $500,000 over 50 days and an additional $500,000 next year or risk shutting its doors for good.
Trouble began when $3 million dollars in federal funds associated with a decades-long AIDS study were mishandled between 2006 and March of this year. An internal review found that some of the grant money was used to cover general operating expenses at Howard Brown.
Edwards says his team is deeply committed to resolving the effects of past mismanagement.
Howard Brown is one of the country's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered health care organizations, and serves over 6,000 individuals, many of whom live with HIV/AIDS. Through the Broadway Youth Center, HBHC, reaches 5,000 LGBTQ teens.
HBHC continues to ask the community to participate in a "Lifeline Appeal" by providing direct donations on the Center's website, www.howardbrown.org or by calling 773-388-1600.
