University of Michigan Student Assembly president Chris Armstrong, who became the target of Michigan Assistant Attorney General Andrew Shirvell's one-man campaign of anti-gay harassment, has found some new allies.
According to OutsSports.com, University of Michigan athletes from football, baseball, hockey, gymnastics, rowing, softball and a number of other sports are showing public support for the openly gay Armstrong.
The athletes have posed for photos wearing pro-Armstrong t-shirts that read: "Elected by us. Respected by us. I expect respect for myself and my community. When one member of our community is targeted, we are all attacked."
Public relations specialist Howard Bragman is reportedly behind the effort.
Shirvell wrote a blog called "Chris Armstrong Watch" devoted to cyber-bulling Armstrong. He would also show up at campus events to taunt Armstrong.
Shirvell has since taken a leave of absence of the Michigan Attorney General's office and has been barred from the University of Michigan campus.
The issue of bullying has made national headlines following a rash of teen suicides that came after the victims experienced bullying based on assumed or actual sexual orientation.
