New York City -
The debate about whether Ann Coulter is pro- or anti-gay was not settled Saturday night after her highly-anticipated appearance Saturday at Homocon 2010, the first annual convention of gay conservatives sponsored by gay GOP group GOProud.
Coulter had received heat from social conservatives for her decision to speak at the New York City event.
The conservative celebrity was called a "deserter" by the
Christian conservative group American Family Association (AFA).
"Count Ann Coulter and Glenn Beck as the latest deserters in the culture war and in the battle for sexual normalcy," AFA's Bryan Fischer wrote at the group's website, referring to Beck's recent pronouncement that gay marriage is not a threat. "They have flinched at 'precisely that little point which the world and the devil … are attacking,' and so have forfeited the right to consider themselves any longer culture warriors."
Coulter's move also cost her a speaking gig at World Net Daily's (WND) Taking America Back National Conference in Miami.
Joseph Farah, editor and CEO of WND, rescinded an invitation for her to speak at the conference.
"Ultimately, as a matter of principle, it would not make sense for us to have Ann speak to a conference about 'taking America back' when she clearly does not recognize that the ideals to be espoused there simply do not include the radical and very 'unconservative' agenda represented by GOProud," Farah said.
But Coulter appears to be having the last laugh. In an appearance on Fox News' Red Eye, she called Farah a "publicity whore" and referred to WND as "fake Christians."
"These are fake Christians trying to get publicity," she said.
And POLITICO.com reported that at Homocon 2010, she told gay Republicans that marriage "is not a civil right – you're not black."
After explaining that gay people are among the wealthiest demographic groups in the country, she joked: "Blacks must be looking at the gays saying, 'Why can't we be oppressed like that?'"
Coulter is a syndicated columnist and author of numerous anti-liberal books, including How to Talk to a Liberal (If You Must): The World According to Ann Coulter.
