Forces parents to choose between male and female

Republican Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt signed a law banning nonbinary gender as an option on birth certificates. It is the first such ban in the U.S.

Legislation followed a settlement made by the Oklahoma Department of Health to allow a nonbinary option. It was the result of a civil case brought by an adult who sued after being refused to be marked as nonbinary.

The settlement angered "family values" conservatives resulting in the resignation of the health department chief.

Lambda Legal, the leading LGBTQ court advocate, said Oklahoma is the first state to ever write such a ban into state law.
