President Obama: 'an incredibly cool guy'

New York City - Elisabeth Hasselbeck, the conservative co-host of "The View," said in a recent interview that she supports gay marriage.

"I am not ultra-ultra-conservative on every issue; I actually support gay marriage," she told Fancast. "I think the gay marriage thing would definitely surprise people. For some people, it will surprise them to the point that they won't want to hear it. 'No, that can't be, I really want to have this sort of idea of her in my head,' so I sort of rain on their parade there."

That makes Hasselbeck more liberal than President Obama on the issue; he has said he supports "equal rights" and civil unions. Incidentally, Hasselbeck describes Obama as "an incredibly cool guy."

Hasselbeck said she's more of a federalist than a conservative, with a bit of an independent streak. She said one of the country's biggest problems is the government's need to "mandate, mandate, mandate."

"There's so many gray issues, be it abortion or gay marriage," she said. "There's a lot of discussion to be had and that's why I love ‘The View' and I wish that there was more focus on that in-between, gray area than [just] smacking a label on somebody. That's the easy thing to do."
