Gay couple told they can't have Marge & Homer at civil ceremony

Mon. July 5, 2010

Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales - A gay couple in South Wales who wanted huge plastic versions of Marge and Homer Simpson at their civil ceremony have been told d'oh.

Glyn Stott and his partner Roy Culliford are big Simpsons fans, who have spent more than $150,000 on memorabilia.

They wanted the 5-foot tall plastic Homer and Marge to be their guests of honor.

But the Simpsons were banned, not because the couple is gay, but because there of rules requiring that civil ceremonies be held in a "solemn and dignified manner," reports the UK Mirror.

Plus, the registrar's office had a busy schedule which would have been derailed by the time needed to haul in the plastic figurines.

"It was a real shame. I really wanted Homer and Marge by my side," said Stott. "We still Simpsoned it up by having the wedding cake and the theme song."
