Sat. July 3, 2010

Chicago, IL - State Representative Greg Harris, of the 13th District on Chicago's north side, is the recipient of the 2010 Community Leadership Award from the Illinois State Bar Association (ISBA). He received the award on Friday, June 25, during the organization's 134th Annual Meeting at the Hyatt Regency St. Louis at The Arch, St. Louis, Missouri.

Given by the ISBA's Committee on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI), the honor recognizes individuals for efforts to foster understanding of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people and their issues of concern.

As the highest ranking, openly gay elected Illinois official, and as a self-declared person with AIDS, he has served as a powerful role model for and an inspiration to many Illinois residents. Over the years, he has successfully mobilized people and groups into action that generates results, especially on the issue of AIDS.

His service has extended to helping organizations that are committed to protecting the rights and integrity of other vulnerable groups such as domestic violence victims and the homeless. Since joining the Illinois House, he has sponsored numerous bills that range from marriage equality and nursing home regulatory reform to controlling dangerous drugs and protecting our historic sites.

The 33,000-member ISBA, with offices in Springfield and Chicago, provides professional services to Illinois lawyers, and education and services to the public.
