Iceland's lesbian PM marries partner

Mon. June 28, 2010

Reykjavík, Iceland - The world's only openly lesbian head of state is now the world's only married lesbian head of state.

Iceland's Prime Minister Johanna Sigurdardottir married her long time partner Jonina Leosdottir on Sunday.

The prime minister is 67-years-old. Leosdottir is a writer and she's in her 50's.

They've been united in a civil union for years, but on June 12, Iceland's parliament unanimously passed a law allowing same-sex partners to marry.

The Prime Minister was previously married to a man and she has two sons from that relationship.

Her sexuality has never been an issue in Iceland, which is known for its tolerance.

She has made a point of pushing for women's rights, and when the state outlawed strip clubs, she said: "The Nordic countries are leading the way on women's equality, recognizing women as equal citizens rather than commodities for sale."
