WATCH: Dan Levy Super Bowl ad

Sat. February 6, 2021

For those who do not care for football, Super Bowl commercials have become the main event for millions of viewers.

Many LGBTQ viewers look for their favorite stars or themes meaningful to the community. Representation still maters even in the most audacious of America’s rituals of market capitalism.

The biggest LGBTQ star this year is featured in a commercial from Mars Wrigley Confectionary and their flagship brand, M&Ms.

Dan Levy of Schitt’s Creek fame follows vignettes of people apologizing for very 2021 reasons. And then comes Levy and a promise viewers will doubt he’ll keep.

The offerings for Super Bowl adverts this year are pared down as corporations decided to save money (many retailers are near bankruptcy), use their money in other philanthropic ways (a resurrected Mr. Peanut is now donating money to the trans-friendly Girl Scouts and other causes), or think it in bad taste to so much in ad dollars in the middle of a pandemic.

99.9 million people around the world watched the 2020 Super Bowl featuring the champion Kansas City Chiefs besting the San Francisco 49ers. That year, a 30-second spot cost corporations about $5.6 million.

The Kansas City Chiefs will face off against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for Super Bowl LV on Sunday, February 7, 2021 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. Kickoff is at approximately 5:30 p.m. (CT) and the game will be televised by CBS. The Weeknd will perform at the halftime show.
