Chicago-area hate group recruiting youth to fight 'gay agenda'

Sat. June 12, 2010

Chicago, IL - The hate group Americans For Truth About Homosexuality (AFTAH), based in west suburban Naperville, has organized a seminar to instruct young people how to "combat" the so-called gay agenda.

Peter LaBarbera, who heads the anti-gay group, claims to have spent many years "tracking" and "exposing" the "gay agenda."

The "Truth Academy" will be held August 5-7 in suburban Carol Steam to, according to organizers, train "pro-family" advocates how to counter so-called "homosexual misinformation."

"Let's face it: much of the conservative establishment has dropped the ball on fighting the homosexual agenda (or given up entirely), so AFTAH is stepping up to train a new generations of activists to contend with the sexual sin movement that has fooled so many Americans into treating a human wrong -- changeable same-sex behavior -- as a 'civil right," LaBarbera writes on the hate group's website.

Ironically, LaBarbera's Americans for Truth was labeled a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) earlier this year. The SPLC's criteria for labeling a group or organization as a hate group requires that the group spread discredited and slanderous propaganda.

The "Truth Academy" is geared toward youth between 14-25 years old and costs $99. AFTAH is looking for "sponsors" to underwrite the costs for attendance.

LaBarbera has assembled a team of "instructors" that includes Robert Knight of Coral Ridge Ministries, who continues to site the discredited research of Paul Cameron. Previously, the SPLC labeled the Illinois Family Institute - a group formerly headed by LaBarbera - as a hate group when they cited Cameron as an "authority" on homosexuality.

Other instructors include: Ryan Sorba of the Young Conservatives of California, Laurie Higgins of the Illinois Family Institute. Higgins has compared the LGBT community to the Nazi Party and recently attacked President Obama for acknowledging June as LGBT Pride Month.
