Golden Girl star Rue McClanahan dies at 76

Thu. June 3, 2010

Rue McClanahan, best-known for her role as Blanche Deveraux on the 1980s sitcom "Golden Girls" has died, according to People magazine.

McClanahan reportedly suffered a massive stroke while recovering from bypass surgery she had earlier this year. Her manager, Barbara Lawrence, says that family surrounded her and that she went in peace.

With McClanahan's passing, Betty White is the only surviving member of the original "Golden Girls" cast.

"Rue was a close and dear friend. I treasured our relationship. It hurts more than I even thought it would, if that's even possible," White said of her close friend in a released statement.

A popular show with gay men, "Golden Girls" ran on NBC from 1985 to 1992.
