Uptown favorites Big Chicks and Tweet have responded to fast-moving developments in the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak with a self-imposed quarantine for two weeks starting at the end of the business day on Monday.
Here's what owner Michelle Fire posted on the Big Chicks' website:
"To my Big Chicks and Tweet families... my son Michael, all our friends, customers and loyal patrons, employees, vendors, neighbors and all family members.
"It is with firm resolve and much deliberation about the current public health crisis that I have come to the difficult decision to voluntarily do a self-imposed quarantine by closing both Big Chicks and Tweet at the close of Monday night bar service on March 16th for at least 2 weeks.
"I believe this is in the best interest of our staff, customers, families and society. We pride ourselves on our personal relationships and the deep connections we have with each other and you.
"We look forward to reopening as quickly and seamlessly as possible, to rekindle the spirit and the flames of friendship, community and love.
"We will miss you all! Love Michelle and everyone."
Fire stressed that staff at both locations will be placed on paid leave.
"Kudos to Michelle Fire for weighing the pro's and con's and making the difficult decision of closing down her bar and restaurant for the next couple of weeks," Ald. James Cappleman (46th Ward) told GoPride.com. "When Michelle makes the decision to reopen, let's all do our part and support her businesses and her staff."
Response on social media has also been positive with a majority of commenters praising Fire's leadership.
"Bravo, this is the right thing to do," Rick Behnke posted to Facebook. "I will definitely give you my business when you reopen."
Stefanie Wright wrote, "Your ethics match your delicious food and drinks."
"Thank you! Very smart," commented Victoria Stagg Elliott. "I promise to spend more money with you when this is over."
Fire, a neighborhood resident, is loved and respected by the community. In 2016, an honorary street sign reading "Big Chicks Way" was installed by the City of Chicago above the street outside the popular bar.
Big Chicks, 5024 N. Sheridan, has been around for 33 years.
