Chicago Police this week increased the number of officers stationed on CTA trains and buses, including a more visible presence at the Belmont "L" stop in Lakeview.
Approximately 10 to 15 officers are being added in response to increased crime on the transit system. Over 40 officers were added to the system this past summer. Chicago Police Public Transportation Cmdr. Cindy Sam told Block Club Chicago that around 200 officers are now patrolling trains and buses.
The move comes after Lakeview residents met last week with Alderman Tom Tunney (44th Ward) and representatives from the CTA and police department's transit unit. According to CWBChicago, just-released data from the city shows crime on CTA trains and platforms is up 104% since 2014 with last year showing a 5% increase.
There have been a series of high-profile crimes on the "L", including the New Year's Day attack of a 55-year-old man by five teenagers at the Belmont Brown Line.
The Belmont "L" stop, which serves Boystown, is one of the busiest stations in the city's transit system.
