The mayor of Washington, D.C. has a lot of explaining to do after his office gave an award to the leader of "Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays and Gays."
Mayor Adrian Fenty has apologized for the certificate, which thanks Regina Griggs for her "dedication, commitment and outstanding contributions" to the so-called "ex-gay" movement.
Fenty's people claim the certificate was the result of an staff member who screwed up.
"We apologize for the error as it runs contrary to the mayor's vision of a more open and inclusive city," Fenty spokeswoman Mafara Hobson told the Washington Post. "The mayor is proud of his ardent support of the LGBT community."
Griggs does not even live in Washington. She lives in Virginia.
She defended the certificate to the Washington Post.
"I obviously didn't nominate myself," Griggs told the Post. "This was brought to the mayor by a D.C. resident, and I was given an award."
