The Illinois House of Representatives voted today to pass legislation that will require schools to fight bullying.
SB3266 passed the House unanimously by a vote of 108-0. The Illinois State Senate passed the bill earlier this month.
"Passing a statewide anti-bullying bill was one of our top legislative priorities for this year," Equality Illinois CEO Bernard Cherkasov told ChicagoPride.com.
The bill covers bullying specifically targeted at students because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
Schools will be required to adopt anti-bullying policies, create resistance education and training for students, and other reasonable measures to product students.
"I am especially grateful for leadership of our partner organizations on this issue, such as Illinois Safe Schools Alliance and the Illinois State Board of Education," said Cherkasov.
The bill will now go to Governor Pat Quinn for signing.
