Me in a nutshell

I like sports, A LOT; especially basketball. In fact, I recently returned from Australia where I competed for two seasons in a semi-professinal league. At the moment I'm tinkering with the idea of playing tackle football for the Chicago Force, but I just can't see myself in a helmet. I do like to maintain some level of fitness, but am to no extent a "gym-fanatic". In addition to the obvious sportiness, I'm something of a foodie and like to try new things in the kitchen. Because I LOVE to cook, I tend to surround myself with those who love to eat! I am famous amongst my friends for my carpet picnics (finger foods to be enjoyed with wine on the living room floor). If the idea of foie gras, truffles and sweet breads doesn't completely gross you out, then email me--we'll do dinner (And if the names Anthony Bourdain, Ruth Reichl and Thomas Keller mean anything to you--take me, I'm yours). I love to read and am known to listen to NPR (I have a bit of a hetero crush on Ira Glass. He's so brilliantly wry.). I play acoustic guitar and had 10 years of classical voice training as a child/teenager, but a pretty sensitive embarrassment/vulnerability chip keeps me from engaging in either while in public or sober. I can be a homebody (dinner & board games--SCRABBLE anyone?), but it's usually hard for me to resist a good dive bar with cheap beer and a good juke box (this means it has at least 1/2 the line up from Bonnaroo at any given time). Every now and then I like to throw on a dress and heels and "do the damn thing". But at the end of the day it's the simple pleasures that get me: being outside in beautiful weather, movies that are so deliciously bad, they're good, a good glass of wine after a stressful day, cilantro. Simple.

That's me in a nutshell--a very long, rambling nutshell.

I'm a pretty laid back chick, a lifelong athlete, a self proclaimed "foodie" and a fierce music lover. I find the dating scene difficult to negotiate as all of my friends are straight, and I, apparently, don't "look gay". For now I'm just looking for good people to hang out with and if something develops from that, then great! I like going out just as much as I like to stay in--it all depends on the company. I love being active--football in the park, swim workouts, pick-up at the Y--I do it all. I will never turn down checking out a new restaurant or a good glass of red, and I will cancel everything for board game/pizza night with good company. My weaknesses are a good sense of humor and a well executed puppy-dog face. Oh yeah, if you have pets, I'll love them as if they were my own :)

Likes: Sincerity, consideration of others, CONFIDENCE, athleticism, SENSE OF HUMOR, sensitivity

Turn-offs: SELFISHNESS and DISHONESTY. Avoid those and we'll see how things go.

Interests

Favorite movies

Schindler's List (morbid, I know), Harold & Maude (again with the morbid), The Shawshank Redemption (slightly more upbeat), Hoosiers (that's a normal one!), A League of Their Own (a sporty lesbian must!), Xanadu (yeah, that's my curve ball)

Favorite music

Ani Difranco, Rachel Yamagata, Feist (old school Feist), Tegan & Sara, Dave Matthews Band, Ray Lamontagne, The 1900's, Amos Lee, Iron & Wine, Matisyahu, Phish, OAR, Dispatch, Alanis Morrisette (old school), Sarah McLachlan (old school), Natalie Merchant, Janis Joplin, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Peaches, The Murmurs, Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie, Anthony Hamilton, John Legend.

Favorite food

Anything with spinach or truffles. I am taking full advantage of the wealth of authentic latin restaurants after spending over a year in the least latin corner of the world. Please note: Australians do NOT do latin! Currently I'm obsessed with El Nandu in Logan Square. Their sweetbreads and empanadas are insanity on a plate!

Favorite TV shows

Check, Please!, Iron Chef, Top Chef, anything on ESPN, The L Word, Kath & Kim (the Australian version), Summer Heights High (can't wait till it airs on HBO), Project Runway
