The world's first portable fentanyl device Defent One was launched late last year and countless lives are already being saved by using it. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid drug used to treat chronic pain, similar to morphine but more potent. Just two milligrams of the opioid can cause a lethal overdose and is commonly found to be mixed in the supply of street drugs in various regions of the country.

Fentanyl poisoning has invaded cocaine culture from hustlers contaminating their stashes and then providing it to others. Carrying naloxine or Narcan is recommended to reverse the effects of an overdose but prevention is even better.

Checking the chemicals beforehand with an infrared spectrometer and fentanyl test strips are places to start toward safety. Defent One is another effective tool to try for those who imbibe. The device is portable and triumphs over test strips by detecting fentanyl with a minuscule sample amount of 15ng.

To begin, tear open the packet for a one-time use and place powder in the supplied bag inside the kit. For pills crush them first then scoop out the tiny amount with a small spoon while leveling off the top. Push open the top black lid with your thumb and insert the sample into the device while keeping it upright to not spill the liquid inside. Shake the device for five seconds and pull the ring then push the base upwards until it clicks. Place the tester upright on a flat surface to process this investigation in three minutes. The results appear similar to a COVID take-home test. Two lines mean no fentanyl detected, a T line signifies an invalid test and a solo C line says fentanyl is part of the mix.

A QR code allows anonymous reporting of a positive reaction and investigators can use the information to track fentanyl hot spots throughout the globe.

There is still a great deal of stigma in the world about mind-altering substances and along with that shame comes death and side effects amongst the population who consume these products behind closed doors.

Similar to the same line of ignorant thinking that condoms encourage more sex and PrEP discourages prophylactic use, having a device to test drugs doesn't invigorate popularity. People will continue to have risky behaviors, but offering them new ways to partake safely gives them healthier options to choose from.

With opioids killing more than three times the amount of people as cocaine, prevention is the key to stopping the spread of dangerous poison. Defent One is another option in this journey towards saving lives and hopefully, a reusable device will be part of the future.
