Red Bull presented a Dance Your Style qualifier live and in person at Morgan Manufacturing on Morgan Street in Chicago on April 24, 2022. There were 16 dancers who took turns battling it out in pairs in the center of a hefty crowd in the modern venue.

Instead of having a panel of judges, over 650 spectators were given light-up armbands to hold up and vote for their favorite performer. The winner advanced to the national finals that will be held in New Orleans on May 21 and 22 of this year. After that, the Red Bull Dance Your Style World Finals will be taking place in Johannesburg, South Africa on December 10.

Bravemonk hosted the show and DJ Ca$h Era provided the tunes. The room was full of talented individuals who showed off their skills before the event officially began.

Several members of the LGBTQ+ community were represented in the Dance Your Style competition in Chicago that night.

Originally from Chicago Katana Pop has been dancing almost her whole life. She was a competitive figure skater until she had an injury and began dancing instead. She currently hails from Oakland, California and competed with Red Bull in 2019 at a breakdancing event. “I get to come out and show people me!” she said.

Katana described herself as a popper with older dance moves such as “the robot” but continues to explore all types of movement. Her ballet and jazz training certainly paid off as she slayed the competition on her first round of battles that evening.

Detroit was in the house with Queen Gabby who specializes in Jit, a style of footwork rooted in the soul of Zimbabwe. Her suggestion for upcoming dancers is to take classes and attend events such as Dance Your Style. She describes the LGBT nightlife scene in Detroit as “popping”!

The Crown [David Stalter] took home the actual crown on April 24 after an intense battle with Kid Nimbus. Follow his dance adventures in the competition further at!
