Campy and Classic Christmas Carols

'Tis the season for holiday shows and there are two versions of the Dicken's classic A Christmas Carol in Chicago currently.

Joan Crawford is revived in Hell in a Handbag's production of Christmas Dearest. This silly ship is tightened up since last year's run and it is smooth sailing for laughs. This tongue in cheek troupe have discovered what works and the lines are delivered on point to be success.

Frankie Leo Bennett merely has to stand there dressed as daughter Christina to get a laugh. What a spoiled little brat!

The only critique here is the space of Mary's Attic is too small to hold their legion of fans. Hopefully with more fundraisers and the support of their die hard following David Cerda and the gang can move to a bigger place in 2016.

The ghost of Bette Davis haunts until December 30 so grab a ticket at www.handbagproductions.org before each performance sells out.

A more classic telling of the story lies with The Goodman Theatre's A Christmas Carol now celebrating a 38th year. Larry Yando as Ebenezer Scrooge could do this role in his sleep and adds little touches to keep awake. Even his snoring is entertaining.

Travis A. Knight as the Ghost of Christmas Past is not only a hunk but a real angel flying through the air with painted on abs.

The Cratchit family shows diversity and makes it important for viewers to see the variety of families that are out there. Hopefully one day we will get a gay or lesbian family at that table with their children. One can only dream...
