When visiting the major city of Reykjavik in Iceland, tourists can experience outdoor destinations as well as indoor experiences to learn about history and culture.
The Reykjavik City Card cuts down the cost of these excursions with a 48-hour time limitation and possible fees for special services. This automatically creates a fun race to educate and sightsee as much as possible. Put on your walking shoes and make the most of your time in this picturesque part of the world
The Art Museum is the home for their largest art collection in Iceland and has three locations: Ásmundarsafn, Hafnarhús and Kjarvalsstaðir. Recently, Hafnarhús was used as a venue for the Iceland Airwaves music festival and the former harbor warehouse space provided plenty of room for the various performances.
Located by the old harbor in the capital lies the Maritime Museum with exhibits covering fishing and sea adventures.
The immersive Settlement Exhibition focuses on the archaeological aspects of Iceland, is located in Reykjavik's city centre. There are several hidden treasures inside, including a Viking longhouse perfectly preserved in its original location.
Stay indoors with the dynamic Museum of Photography or take a walk outside to see over 20 historical buildings at the Arbaer Open Air Museum.
The House of Collections is full of unique art on multiple levels, with a children's section set up for creativity.
The City Card includes the zoo and eight communal geothermal swimming pools, plus discounts to whale watching tours and Aurora Reykjavik with virtual northern lights tours.
While The Icelandic Phallological Museum is not part of the package, it's worth checking out to see over 300 penises under one roof. The original curator, Sigurður Hjartarson, began with a bull's body part and his collection grew to 100 species of mammals.
From beautiful cathedrals near shopping districts to multiple museums within walking distance, there is plenty to explore while visiting the capital of Iceland.
