Ethan Hunt tackles another quest on the big screen in Mission: Impossible and The Final Reckoning doesn't appear to be his last assignment. For a film franchise based on a television show, Mission: Impossible has manifested longevity and staying power.
Serving as producer once again, Tom Cruise has made this project possible and personal. By taking ownership of one of the highest-grossing film series of all time, this will be his legacy. Final Reckoning doesn't disappoint and viewers are not required to do a lot of homework to enjoy the ride while sitting next to longtime fans.
The Impossible Mission Force is a ragtag team of skilled professionals ready to take on tasks to save the world. Cruise once again plays one of the agents named Ethan Hunt. Reckoning is also a return for Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell and Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn. Rhames is an original cast member from 1996 and Pegg started in 2005 with Mission: Impossible III. There are several surprise cameos and big names attached to this particular quest. Some of the characters are unnecessary and that's where this eighth endeavor misses the mark a bit.
The agents are seeking to stop an artificial intelligence force known as the Entity. A series of adventures carries Hunt and the IMF team around the world over land and sea.
The water scenes are captivating and the air scenes on a plane are riveting. Cruise was attached to the vehicle with one cord during his wing walk while battling a snake flying the plane. The theme music from Lalo Schifrin never grows old and neither does Cruise's hair as it takes being wind-blown to a whole new level.
This is a sequel to Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One and was renamed after the first installment failed. In T-minus five seconds, this Mission flies into theaters and the stakes are high. Final Reckoning is almost three hours long and its budget makes it one of the most expensive movies ever made.
Will there be a spinoff with a new batch of agents or maybe a reboot of the television show?
Audiences might not be seeing the last mission ever, but Cruise and the cast are taking a well-deserved break over Labor Day Weekend.
