The Fall Guy follows the adventures of stuntman Colt Seavers and stars Ryan Gosling who is currently on a career high. He is joined by Emily Blunt as Jody Moreno, generally not known for comedy and the duo attempt to create onscreen chemistry.
It's a tale as old as time as two crew members fall in love and then suffer relationship challenges on a film set. Moreno eventually gains power in the industry giving her a chance to make a movie called Metalstorm. The protagonist is not feeling Colt enough with an injury leaving Seavers struggling with more inadequacies and on the set drama. There are gnarly action sequences and way too many characters throughout the story that sometimes don't know where to go.
This loss of direction affects several of the actors such as Ted Lasso's Hannah Waddington who is not given much to do other than wear a bad wig.
Some of the fault lies with the director David Leitch who should know better and has served as a stunt performer in the past. The Fall Guy is an homage to his work and the classic '80s television show complete with surprise cameos in the cinematic version.
There is a great deal of dry humor, plenty of inside jokes and behind-the-scenes moments in this project. It's a film within a film that struggles to find its mark, but has its heart in the right place. The running time of 126 minutes does drag especially towards the end, but there are some worthy credit scenes that display how enjoyable this endeavor was for the cast and crew.
Overall “Against All Odds” The Fall Guy lands in the middle of the road without taking too much of a nosedive.
The Fall Guy comes crashing into theaters on May 3, 2024.
