Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Wed. January 10, 2007

By Bill Pritchard

January 15th celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in the United States. It is a time to remember, reflect and respond to the call of that make a difference pioneer Martin Luther King Jr.!

King's wife, Coretta Scott King challenged us saying, "On this holiday, we commemorate the universal, unconditional love, forgiveness and nonviolence that empowered his revolutionary spirit."

We live in a great country, rich in diversity, and yet we have so many that are not treated equally. The King Center (www.thekingcenter.org) has reminded us that this is meant as a "Day On" not a day off! That's a terrific point! Sure there is time off for many of us, but what can we do on that day that would challenge ourselves to that higher calling of "unconditional love, forgiveness and nonviolence?" Now I know what some of you are saying, "He's too preachy!" Perhaps I am, but I bet you can see the importance of Dr. King's calling. It's one that I feel we can all do each and every day.

Thankfully groups like Equaility Illinois adhere to that challenge by securing, protecting and defending the basic civil rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons in the state of Illinois. These are the folks who emulate Dr. King's mission and passion for our rights.

To that end we at chicagopride.com want to remind you about the Equaility Illinois Gala taking place this next weekend, January 27, 2006. This fundraiser is a terrific opportunity to make a difference right here in Chicago. Take it from us the Equaility Illinois Gala is a blast! Everyone dresses up for a great meal, inspiring speeches, fabulous libations and a great dance floor. EVERYONE will be there!! If you would like to attend, tickets are on sale here on the Chicagopride.com front page or by going directly to the EQ website: http://www.EQIL.org

I want to challenge you this month to celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. in committing to be a person of equality, diversity, and care for those around you!
