Are you?
Well?!
Perhaps it is important to define what it means to make a difference.
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary defines it as:
Main Entry: dif·fer·ence
Pronunciation: 'di-f&rn(t)s, 'di-f(&-)r&n(t)s
Function: noun
1 a : the quality or state of being different b : an instance of differing in nature, form, or quality c archaic : a characteristic that distinguishes one from another or from the average d : the element or factor that separates or distinguishes contrasting situations
2 : distinction or discrimination in preference
3 a : disagreement in opinion : DISSENSION b : an instance or cause of disagreement
4 : the degree or amount by which things differ in quantity or measure; specifically : REMAINDER 2b(1)
5 : a significant change in or effect on a situation
The first item in that definition that jumps out to me is being different. How many times do we comment that everyone is all "the same" in our community! DARE to be different! That's what I say! It's not too difficult. Maybe it is harder to accept others differences that makes it hard for us to rise to the challenge.
The other portion of the definition that I take notice of is where it says a significant change in or effect on a situation. There's a real sign of mission! Looking at your life today can you honestly say that you are helping to provide significant change or effect? Before you answer that, be sure to keep in mind that we are our own worst critic.
I have had the opportunity to listen to World changers, life challengers and people that truly Make A Difference and they also question themselves and their accomplishments. There is no real way to measure this change or effect. We can look at a healthy choice, a positive step or a job well done as clues. We can also see a life flourishing or a friend growing out of pain as a sign too. I guess the best sign is something that I think we tend to ignore most of the time. Our hunch I don't know if that's even a word, but we all know what it means!
You know when you have made someone's day. You see when you have helped a situation. It is obvious to witness the change and growth in somebody's life that you have been mentoring. You've got a hunch that your help made the difference! It probably did!
What I am talking about IS a higher calling! It does not say that someone is better than another person it does say to be different and to strive for change or effect in the lives of those around you! This is something we all can be! Making a difference starts with little moments. Those are moments of care, happiness, peace, patience, self-control, gentleness and kindness. These are moments more of being than doing.
